Horizontal Flame Test

Determining the flammability property of polyurethane foam is extremely important, especially in sectors with high safety requirements such as automotive, furniture, mattress, and textile. The burning test conducted for this purpose is designed to measure the reaction the foam shows when it encounters a flame, its ignition behavior, and the flame propagation speed. For the test, a sample is prepared in 356 mm x 100 mm x 13 mm dimensions and fixed to the catchers of the test device via a specially designed U-shaped fixture. During the test, the sample is brought into contact with a small flame source for 15 seconds. After the flame source is removed, the reaction of the foam is evaluated. If the sample self-extinguishes, the length of the burned area is measured and proportioned to the burning time to calculate the burning rate. If the sample does not self-extinguishes, the burning time between two fixed points determined on the device is recorded. This distance is proportioned to the elapsed time to determine the burning rate in mm/s. All measurements are performed according to the TS ISO 3795 standard.
